Case 770 Problems

Hi Guys, still having problems with my 770. Put in electronic ignition and have great spark. Opened up the carb and cleaned it all out and installed new fuel filter. Still won't start. I am stumped. Would appreciate any ideas.

Timing, fuel, or compression, has to be one of these or a combination. Double check the timing.

Bob, Before you pull your hair out, start with a few easy things. Bring number one cylinder to tdc , then check to see if the rotor is on number one. check make sure rotor is turning and plug wires are correct. Check rotor to make sure that or if there is a spacer[in the rotor that it does not move, Check and make sure your wire from the coil to the distibuter in not grounded.

VAC, I installed a pertronics in a Prestolite in a 770. Mine ran OK but in 50 or so hours it would quit, inspection found the rotor burned out over the right hand tip where the spark was jumping to the tower at about a 40 degree angle to the brass tip on the rotor.

I replaced a couple rotors and each did the same thing. The module was in the wrong place on the new plate and the spark was out of phase with the cap electrodes and the spark had to jump that far to get to the cap electrode. I called pertronics and told them it was out of phase and they asked for the distributor.

When the distributor was returned they had removed the module, redrilled the plate and reriveted the module in a new location. I have no problems at all now and have not had to revisit the ignition.

Check the rotor for a severe carbon track on the tip. Pertronics knows there is a problem with that particular unit and will fix it free of charge but the agrevation factor till you get it sorted out is frustrating.

Let me know what you find. BTW do you have the distributor PN. If it is what I think you must use a different rotor and cap with the pertronics conversion.

Good suggestions, have a couple of mechanic friends coming for Sunday dinner, will put them to work this afternoon and check it out. Thanks

As you suggested, I checked it all and at TDC it does indeed point to #1, all seems right. I know when I figure it out it is going to be something simple. Thanks Bob
