300 case to move rounb bales

I have been looking for a tractor for my daughter to move round bales. I have several she could use but she lives 200 miles away! I thought I would buy one for her. I found a 300 square nose with a loader. Would this model with a loader be suitable for moving small round bales? Also it has a narrow front end. I have used narrow fronts most of my life{rabbit in a briar patch} but I don't know about my daughter or her husband using one with a loader. How hard and expensive would it be for me to find a wide front for it? Thanks for any advice. Im still looking for the right case for my herd. Thanks, Lee

How big is a small round? You would probably need rear ballast if they were going to stack them. I don't like loaders with narrow fronts, particularly with a light tractor. My thoughts

I looked up the tractor data A 300 square nose is sort of rare. Looks like only a couple thousand were made.

It looks like that's a small tractor around 25 hp. If your handling 4x4 bales it might be ok.

As far as getting a wide front, Elmers repair or other salvage yard is your best bet.
Maybe someone like casenutty might know what other models of front ends may fit the tractor.

My personal choice says I would want a wide front end on the tractor. You and I could get by with a narrow front but I would not let any member of my family near it

The 300 square nose is not rare. There are more square nose in my area than round nose. I have one of each.

The square nose is the 300B series built in 1958 & 1959. The 300B series has models 310B & 311B. The dual & single wheel narrow front tractor are sometimes referred to as model 312B but some manuals list them as model 311B same as the adjustable wide front model 311B tractors. So you can call yours a 312B and most Case tractor guys will immediately know what you have.

300B tractor has a 148 cid engine. On the ground rated 29 hp, belt 31 hp. Plenty of hp for a small tractor.

The model 310B is the utility version most with a fixed I-beam front axle. They will handle small round bails.

The model 311B with adjustable tube type front axle in my opinion would be marginal depending on wt of the bails.

I wouldn't even consider a narrow front unless the operator is experienced.

I haven't tried it but I suspect changing from a nfe to a wfe would be a tough job for most of us even with 300-300B experience.

I Agree on the wide front at minimum! even if the bales you move are 800-1000lbs a 300 in opinion is not really enough tractor to handle them safely, yes I have seen loaders on them that can lift the weight but you have a bale in front of the bucket changing the leverage a Lot! For a experienced operator you might get by if you always are carrying a bale on the Eagle Hitch for counter weight, as for a front end I would think 200B-400B-early 430/530 would fit

I would get a bigger tractor. Moving round bales with a tractor that small is a good way to end up in the obituary section of the paper. You didn't say how big the bales are but I wouldn't consider any 1960s tractor less then 80 hp for a 5x6.

I agree go with a bigger tractor, I used a Ford 4000 and had to be careful so not to tip over, also bales were hard on the spindles, I replaced it with a 930 with a loader and never looked back. I could not lift a bale with the 3 pt of the 730 with out the front end coming off the ground. BE CAREFUL

Changing the nfe to a wfe will be messy. You take the bottom off the steering gear box and it should be full of grease. Are the 300 adjustable wide fronts strong enough for loader use. I have seen the later 30 series broken and fixed.

It"s pretty hairy when you have a tractor overloaded on the front bucket, and you discover that braking has no little or no effect because you"ve got no weight on the rears. Get a bigger tractor and live to tell about it.

Thanks guys, I knew you could help me. I will keep looking. I had seen it advertised about 75 miles away and have never seen one in person. The knowledge on the case board is super and I knew you would guide me right. I would still like to have a 930, 970 or 1070 for myself but they are not common around here[mid. tn.] Guess if I find one I might have to let her have it.lol Thanks again , Lee
