Is it 6v or 12v??

Hi,

I've inherited a Case VA and I'm having ignition trouble.

The symptoms are: It would run for a moments then die. After a few tries it wouldn't start any more and there is no spark.

What I know: The top of the coil is cracked, top of condenser looks swollen and the points cooked and look like they've over heated (the end of the contact arm is discolored).

It has a 12v battery, but the way everything is so badly cooked. I'm thinking that it's probably still a 6v system, so before I start ordering parts, how can I verify what it's supposed to be and, if it is 6v, what else it likely cooked?

Thanks in advance!!
Scott

they were 6 volt pos ground from the factory, I have converted several of them to 12 volt, I just installed a resistor to cut back the volts to 6, hooked the wires correctly on the coil for Neg ground and installed a Alt

Thanks, I do realize that originally they we 6v and many have been converted. I also inherited a restored VAC and it's 12v with an alternator.

The VA in question doesn't have an alternator though, so how can I verify which voltage it's currently wired for?

I'll also have to see if it's currently a positive ground, that'd be a dead give away.

Nate, all Rock Island build tractors were "Pos" ground from the factory no matter if they were 6 or 12 volt, all Racine build tractors were "Neg" ground, just the way CASE did it then lol,

(quoted from post at 15:47:58 08/20/14) I use my volt meter if in doubt of voltage

Not sure how the meter would help, if a 12v battery was put in by mistake, I'd see 12v in the system, right? It won't run so I can test the generator output. :?

Wow, they sure made easy...NOT!!!

Maybe I need to take of the generator and spin it on the bench to see what voltage I get.

sorry thought you ment voltage going tot he points, the gen should have a tag that is stamped with voltage, if not a starter/alt repair shop should be able to tell from the insides what it is

I'll take a look for the tag and go from there, thanks!!

If the tractor has lights, put out a light bulb and see which voltage the bulbs are.

well, a generator can put out either polarity,
depending on the polarity it is initially 'excited'
with. The tag on it is best information.
