Have some distributor questions for CASE mechanics '56-'68

Did the distributors for All Fuel, LP and Gas tractors have different advance amounts? If so what were they, and how was that achieved? If by the plate that holds the points, what were the part numbers for the plates.

Thanks in advance

Dodgeit,

The amount that the weights swing generally sets the degrees of advance in a distributor with no vacuum advance. Do you need more advance, if so, just dial it in by timing it with an advance style timing light. I use an Acton that allows you to set the degrees advance in the light and it brings the timing mark back to zero when running. Just decide what degrees you want and set the light to it and run the engine at full throttle and align the TDC mark with the pointer.

I believe the classes you are running thats all that will be required. If you are running stock or near rpms you do not need a lot of advance, stock should be fine.

It is good to look at the advance mechanism as I have seen some real tragedies that still ran.

mEL, thanks for the reply. The "rebuilt" distributor I have only has 15 degrees of advance. With the tractor timed according to stock settings she falls flat on her face. I have advanced it 10 deg. and now the power is back. I also understand about the weights. That is why I asked about the plate(s). The rebuild house did not send me my distributor back they sent one for a smaller size tractor. So that got me thinking, maybe I just need to change the plate.

Thanks

If I were doing your distributor I would be looking for what is stopping the weights at their outward swing or to strong advance springs and modifying it for more advance.

Changing the plate would not do what you want done as you would just be changing the position of the points which would get into indexing problems between the rotor tip and cap at points opening and create some real problems.

If u time static you will always get only the degrees that the distributor advance allows. I wonder if the springs on the weights are to strong limiting your advance degrees.

I get kits from advance , napa, etc for the HEI delco distributors that have a variety of different strength springs and use light ones to allow maximum advance quicker.

IMHO you should be at at least 25 deg and I would try 30 to see how it acts.
