Should I buy a 511b?

I have a 411b that we are using to mow and rake about 7 acres. It's a bit small for our JD 466 square baler. I have an opportunity to purchase a 511b. Don't know much about them as a tractor. Is it a wise switch?

If I were upgrading I think Id look to go a little bigger. A big 400,700,800,730,830 would be more of a jump in size and capability. The 500b wont have case-o-matic. You might keep the 400b to mow, rake or pull wagon. Are you dropping bales on the ground or pulling a wagon behind the baler? the market value of a 500b or 530 may surprise you compared to a 700 or early 730

I put up a lot of hay with my 800 diesel and it runs the baler and wagon nicely on my rolling fields. If I edge drop for the neighbor I'll use the 530 diesel.

If you are going to run that baler any where near capacity you will need an 830 diesel or larger. I have tried a 730 on one of our 346's and it would not keep up with the 830. Not enough snort!

My 800 does a pretty good job, that little A267D has some hours
on it but it hums right along. When the wagon is about full to capacity it starts to lug a little going up hill but nothing bad at all.

Use to bale squares with a 630 diesel and 24T JD
pullin a 8 pack skid.Smoked like a train from one
end to the other all day long. Course if you could
shift up for 50' I did so. I agree with DKase,
bigger is better!

You should also be aware that the 500B has a 164 dry sleeve engine that is getting tough to find parts for and when you find them they are cashy $$$$.

We bale with 2 830 diesels, 346 JD balers with Farmhand accumulators behind. We drive till 80+ pound bales come out every 14 strokes. With a 14' windrow and 1 1/2 ton hay we run about 5 MPH, and each baler kicks out 300+ bales an hour. 2 1/2 hours will bale up 1500 bales, and 2 hours with the loader will load them up before dark. Unload into the hay shed in the morning and do it all over again. Several years ago I tried a 730 gas on one baler. It worked so hard it took 6 gallons of gas an hour. The 830's run on under 2.

obviously you found one nearby ,, get it you will be pleased ,they are nimble and dependable ,triplerange is best ...worst problem I had with my 500 was the worn out carburater and distributor, couldn't figure out which was acting up .sheesh///.,,. yes ,as others said more power is nice,, but you will have to feed it ,,and some of the bigger old cases are like driving around a 2 story house when barn lot shuttling ...you know your operation better than us ...

We bale with an 830 gasser pulling the Case 230 baler.. tractor just plays with it.. even with 100 bales on the wagon.. We have even used my 530 diesel works it a little, but nothing severe

Dad mows the hay with either his 511B or the 611B.. both great tractors.. you will have to get used to the 36" rubber though.. it is a step UP!!

I've got a bunch of Case balers, but if you run the 466 JD baler at capacity it will out perform two Case machines and use horsepower. We went from 230s to a 24T and it will out bale the 230. Sweep arm on the Case baler is the limiting factor in capacity. It makes a stroke and goes back empty, makes a stroke and goes back empty, while the auger feed on the JD is constantly supplying hay to the plunger.

The field that we're working is pool table flat. I talked to the service tech at the JD dealer and he said that 45hp would be enough for the baler. If I decide (which I guess I think I have) to buy the 511b what would a reasonable price be?

Should I buy a 511b?
