question about 51 dc engine

i am wanting to take the sleeves out to clean the rust build up out for cheap as possible would the babbits be ok if i and when i take pistons out the motor runs good and strong no nocks or smoke i have never taken apart this style of motor with babbits before all because it getting hot on me cannot run my 5 foot pull behind brush hog shredder but for about an hour then have to shut it down and let it cool off any help or guidence would be greatly appreciated

My thoughts are that the babbit can certainly be reused if it's intact and you've kept track of the shims on ea. On slow overheat like mentioned, I'd be willing to bet the block is full of iron sediment and the water can't surround the cylinders anymore. Very common on any old engine which utilized well water. Which is just about all of them There are a variety of ways to deal with it, soaking with muriatic acid seems the best w/o having the block acid dipped which really cleans it up. The same process used to dip bodies for restoration. Any type of water deposit will be eliminated. If the head is off I've also had luck by fabbing up a copper tube, maybe a foot long with a garden hose fitting and then blowing this water into the base of the block thru the cooling holes on top. Makes a mess but you'd be amazed at what blows out....

take lower radiator to block conection off also either take top connection off or make sure a hose can be fitted down the top of radiator. take drain cock out of block if so equipped. use small 1/4 inch copper tube about 3 foot long. first into rear of block through front lower block water opening. Generely number 3 and 4 cylinder are the worst. this is after running with clean water and good radiator flush. If you do take sleeves out be sure and replace lower o rings on sleeves after cleaning lower block groves. I would try cleaning with flush and method above before tearing engine apart. Also check to make sure the water pump is circulating water . Could be impeller in h20 pump is eroded or simple drive pulley and belt totally wore out. Lots to do and check before taking engine apart. If you do take apart grind valves and install new rings. Be sure to take note of shims in rods . also possibly remove thin shim from mains.

i have cleaned out the top of radiator core it had alot of rust in it i took a pick and cleaned it outthe flow was better i am going to try this starting with flush and work my way through the rest of stepsthanks for the info i do not want to take motor apart just yet may take radiator apart though after flush just to get the cores cleanthe pump is good it was replaced couple of years ago and also it luges down going up hill with shredder that is the other thing going on with it it is such a good tractor needs to be paintedafter get motor fixed
