Monday, I had the local tire shop come out and change a couple of rear tires on my 1944 SC & my 1946 VAC. The SC has been setting for about 5 years with a rotted out 13.6-38 and the VAC has been sitting for 2 years with a similar problem on a 10-28. (We were getting the VAC ready for a local parade when an original 10-28 rear blew. I know that it is an original tire, as its a family tractor.) I had a brand new 12.4-28 Firestone 45 degree bar mounted a new rim that obtained on another tractor deal about 15 years ago that would not hold air. The tire guy took it apart and found that there was a thumb tack in the tube. (It must have been it the tire since day one, as it still had the head on it & the tire has never been on the ground.) He patched the tube and mounted it on the VAC. The original VAC rim looked just like new inside when he took the old tire off (no fluid). It still had black paint on the inside of the rim. Now all I have to do is find another 12.4-28 for the other side to get her setting level again. (Anyone got one for sale close to SE-SD?--I have an original 10-28 from 1946 that I'd offer in trade.)
I put the automatic charger on the battery overnight and went out Tuesday morning, took a look at the meter on the charger. It showed the battery to be fully charged. I pulled the switch, hit the starter and she started just like it had been running the yesterday. Exhaust smelled of stale gas, so I dumped in a couple of ounces of stable and 2 1/2 gallons of new gas and hooked it to the spreader. Used it yesterday and today spreading old straw bales that were rotting in the machine shed. The exhaust smells a lot better!
Now if I can get the SC running as easily, I"ll be a happy camper. I"m going to flush the gas tank on it first, before I even put in a battery to try it. It has a lot of white junk in the sediment bulb, so I know its got trash in the tank. (My $0.02 worth jal-SD)

Had a friend that put 12-4s (got 'em cheap  ) on his '48 VAO; was using it for pulling ditch with a 3-pt. vee-ditcher. It wasn't long before the clutch began to slip; the 12-4s were about 4-5 in. taller than the 10-28s that came on the tractor and the 12-4s 'geared it up' so much that the clutch couldn't handle it but then he was actually using it. Probably would not have been a problem if he kept it on the parade circuit.
