S Tranny Problem.

Last Tuesday I backed my 1949 S off the trailer, ran it over to the State Fair display area, and parked it. Everything was working fine. About an hour ago I got on it as I was planning on running it in this evening's parade. I cannot get it into any gear other than 3rd or 4th; the shifter will not move up or down in the center position. What can I do short of taking the sheet metal, gas tank and transmission cover off?

You can remove the shifter assembly by removing the two bolts which retain it, and then withdraw it from the shifter cover. If it has worn thin and bent, you can straighten it and weld it to restore the wear. Otherwise, you are stuck.
Also, you say that you cannot move the shifter up and down, but 3rd is above 4th. At least it is on an SC.

One of mine did that years ago (I believe it was a DC but this should work on an S also) and I unbolted the shifter and lined the gates up with a big screw driver and bolted the shifter back on and have not had any trouble since. I think I had gotten the end of the shifer out of the gates. Nick

Once you remove the shift lever you should be able to see the shift gate and see if they are lined up right. Friend had a kid get on his DC at a show and messin with the shifter got it out of sync. Might have happened on your S also.

That's one of the things that makes this such a good forum! There's usually more than one person that can answer most questions! Nick

This probably won"t help, but if it were me before tearing it apart, I would put it in 4th. gear with the clutch engaged and rock it back and forth a little.
