1030 brakes

I have read on this board several times that you should install larger diameter ball bearings in the 1030 brake assembly to improve the braking action. What size should the new ones be, and where do I find them? Thanks, Don

The standard brake balls are 5/8" and the oversized brake balls are 11/16".

The only place that I know of to buy the over-sized brake balls is Elmer's Repair.

I buy standard 5/8" size balls from Enco in bulk bags.

Pull your brakes off and measure to see how much extra room is in there. I have installed 3/4" and 11/16" balls in them. Stainless Steel balls can be bought at McMaster Carr. If you have bonded linings you might be able to go to 7/8". If riveted the rivets come through before that.
