PTO on my 990 D Brown

Bret, I went out and checked it. There is NO shake, rattle, just roll. I turned it, and it turned on its on for around a 1/2 revolution after I let go of it.
I can put it in gear and then start the engine, and it turns fine. I just CANT start the engine and THEN try to put it in gear.

Okay, something is out of adjustment or worn out. I'd start with adjusting the clutch per the manual. You can also check the clearances through the inspection cover, info should be in the I+T shop manual. Mine was doing the same thing and it was a worn out throwout bearing and a PTO clutch disc that was going.

You likely wont believe it, but I had givin some thought to that there might be some kind of pto clutch disc in there. I also thought about a possible throw out bearing too, but I wondered about that again when I could spin the pto with my hand so easily.
I don't have the I&T manual for it. I intended to get one with my last SS check, but it all and way more went on getting the bailer ready to bale, buying enough gas and diesel to mow/rake/bale it.
Well the hays set out in 3 1/2in rain and is worthless, unless someones feedings snowballs lol. The hay grazer is up again 6/8in and I really need to get it off the ground. My bailer mans equipment is 40 miles away. Im hoping that, he ll be back before Wed as its supposed to be dry till then with only a 20% chance then.
I think I really raked it to heavy for the DB to be able to bale it anyway, and it was way long stemmed, around 3 to 4ft high.
Its been REALLY tight this month, and it will be the same next month as Im thinking of taking out a loan to fix the DB, and buy a needed floor chain, and a long roller chain %60, and new knives, and pick up teeth for the bailer.

You can spin the PTO shaft when it's out of gear because it's not connected to the clutch. The 990 has a twin disc clutch, the main clutch a spacer then the PTO clutch IIRC. If the throw out is worn or if the sliding collar that works the throw out is broke or worn (mine was) then this is just what you'll have happen.

We bale heavy Canary grass here that runs 5-6 foot high. It's coarse and thick and slippery. But we often double the windrows and bale it fine. Could be be the pick up teeth, could be the windrows were too heavy, could be you just pushed it too fast. I dunno. All I can say is that when you do get it fixed you want to start from square one and treat that tractor as though you'd never run one before. Learn what it will do instead of just gunning it. It's a fine tractor for it's day and will give you many, many years of service if you use it right.

Farmallb - I have an I&T manual for David Browns. I've scanned a couple pages that pertain to the clutch and posted below. I'm not sure if they'll be legible but I thought it'd be worth a try as they pertain to adjusting the clutch. You may have to save them to your pictures file and then enlarge them.

If it works I can scan a couple more pages. I can also e-mail them to you directly if you can't read them here as there are size limits to the pictures posted on this forum.

Jim, id sure appreciate it if you could send them to me, I dont know how to enlarge anything on here.

I got a call today while i was out mowing the church yard from Stiener tractor parts. They said they could get the clutch disc parts for $1,100. That wont work with me, im afraid. That and the labor to put the parts in would be way past what I could afford to do this year.

Okay I'll e-mail them to you - I'll need your e-mail address.

I've scanned 9 pages to send to you. Are you on dial-up or high-speed? I'll send them fairly large so you can read them easily - if you're on dial-up I'll maybe split them into 2 or 3 e-mails to make downloading a little easier.

These pages should give you an idea of what you're facing. If you have any questions I'd suggest you direct them to Bret or RGMartin as they have way more experience working on these tractors than I do.

(quoted from post at 00:33:15 07/22/14) Thanks Jim, but at 66, Im afraid I need them bigger.

Okay, I've resent them tonight in three separate e-mails due to the size (over 6 mB each page). I didn't use the size reducer so that's as good as it gets.
