CASE 310E 1957 Loader / Transmission slipping

Hi there
I have a 1957 Case 310E loader/backhoe with a shuttle transmission slipping issue... Here is the history
The forward / reverse lever internal linkage woodruff key broke and I opened the top of the shuttle trans and replaced the broken key and noticed the tranny oil was brown and needed to be changed. I should of used the GL1 type of oil that I believe is the proper type, but couldn't find any locally, I read that I could use straight 30wgt motor oil instead, after filling it with 30wgt, the tractor would slip when in gear, sometimes it grabs but mostly sits in gear and slips, My guess in the shuttle trans plates are slipping? I drained the trans oil from a single drain plug and filled it with some GL1 from Tractorsupply. The trans started grabbing again and I thought all was good, but it is now slipping again. I was thinking that I should thoroughly drain it again and refill with GL1, I read here might be 2 places to drain the trans oil. I don't think the clutch is slipping because I had the engine completely rebuilt and replaced the clutch with pressure plate a few years ago. Any advice is appreciated. Also another issue it that the tractor wont stay in forward unless I hold the lever in forward, it wants to pop out of forward.

Do you have a manual for the unit, none of those to my knowledge used a GL1 gear oil. They used at the time TCH which was a Case brand. It was about the same consistency as ATF. I would get the GL1 out as quickly as possible before damage is done. HYTRAN ULTRA would be the replacement oil nowdays

I would check the main clutch for free travel as there is nothing that just slips other than that. The main clutch should have 1.5-2" of free travel before meeting much resistance.

The popping out of forward is caused most generally by worn synchronizer parts, probably both the input shaft and the synchro unit are worn. Rare case would be a broken detent spring in the synchro shift rail. If so there will not be a distinct locking action when the shifter is moved in either direction, you should feel the shifter lock into the positions, Another possibility would be a worn or bent fork .

Are you sure about the model? the 310E comes up as a crawler and that has a standard gear transmission and no shuttle shift, just a fwd n Rev position in the main gear shift.

I goofed on the model#
The tag reads G 310 W SN#6104109
The trans says shuttle on top, it has a forward reverse lever, a drive/low lever and 1-4 speed shifter / the trans cover has C1222 on it.
The side tag on the frame reads Model 4012369
I don't have a manual, but would like to get one.
Any advice on the proper trans oil would be great

I will say you have a wheel tractor and not a crawler tractor, wheel 310's use 80wt-90wt in the rear end and the current oil I recommend is Case Hy-Tran for everything but the engine, I also use this in my rearend/trans compartments rather than the 80-90wt, costs more but to me its worth it, the "GL" oil is for the rearend/tran on a 310 crawler due to the steering brakes, any Case construction dealer can get you the books you need as well

Yes it is a wheel tractor with a front loader and backhoe, Thank you for the info on the proper type of oil to use. When I drain from just the transmission, do I get all the oil out or do I also need to drain the rear to get it all out.
Thanks again

(quoted from post at 18:23:49 07/16/14) I do not have my book out but there should be at least two on the trans/rear end, and one for the torque tube/hyd,

Thanks Case nutty, For my own knowledge, what type of shuttle trans do I have?

Hello Case Nutty, If you don't mind I have a couple more questions.

I found 2 drains, 1st one is a 1/2" drain under the gearbox, and a 2nd one is a 3/4" drain under the differential. Where is the 3rd drain for the torque tube?

Where do I refill them? Do I just use the single fill hole near the dip stick on the main gearbox? or are there multiple places to refill?

Thanks in advance
Bob
