SC Block Breakage, Was This Very Common?

A very nicely restored SC needed head work and then I found these cracks. Broken between every cyl. We will put the head back on and keep our fingers crossed as the unit is used for parades and shows. Rod.

don't know about the sc but not unusual on a vac and the head gasket seals it off with no issues even under heavy use.

3-11/16" Dome Pistons? Might be a give-a-way that she was asked more to do than she was designed for. I have never seen a crack in an SC Block.

Paint some copper coat on the head gasket and forget about it! I have some tractors on the farm like dad's Allis C and a VAC that are this way, have been in farm use for over a decade.

I have been around a several brands of engines.  When In seeing crankcases that are cracked in the manner this one is it means that it had a coolant mixture that was too weak.  When it freezes and expands it puts too much pressure on the sidewalls of the crankcase.   Think about how many sq. in of surfaces you have on the sides of the crankcase, as it pushes it stretches the small area between the cylinder bores and it splits em.  Too little or no antifreeze in the coolant system.
