Rear end oil in 990 D Brown

Is it a gear oil, trans oil, or a hyd oil that goes into the rear end of a 990 David Brown tractor?

15w40 motor oil works well in them, the entrained air in engine oil plays nicely with the Selectamatic valve... Hy-tran is fine too, but a little thinner than I like, it makes the gears noisier.

Just what is the selectamatic in a 990 D Brown tractor?
I just see 2 handles. One for high and low and the other for the gear shift. Dad had the same thing on a 37 JD A we had. IF it wasn't on it, it sure was on his 49 A.

Select-0-matic is the hyd system, not the tranny. You can select, draft control, position control, or TCU which is a hybrid manually controlled traction/depth control mode, used with implements such as a semi-mtd. plow.
