970 Case hydraulics

My 970 Case will not steer or will also not lift any implement every once in while. I changed the hydrolic oil and filter. It was hy-tran that I put in. If I loosen the large nut on the big line going to the pump in back of the tractor it starts to work again. It seem you can hear air and then oil will come out by the nut. you can hear the pump start up. It might not do it again for a few weeks. Does any one no what would cause this? Also it is a 8 speed 1 hydrolic filter. THANKS

I once had a customer tractor do that and it turned out to be the hyd. pump was so bad every now and then it would not pick up a prime if it sat for a few days. Can't say that is your problem, but it is a possibility. Rod.

I would check the suction tube orings, if the pump has been replaced they are easy to cut, I always bevel the edge and sand smooth then lube the ring and tube well and a slow rocking motion and they usually slip right in. As rod said the pump is also suspect, especially if the tractor stops driving when the wheels are cramped, just throwin the oring thing in from previous experiences. Keep us posted.

I agree with you both guy's, I did have one 970 start this and thought the pump had went changed it but that was not it, the suction screen was plugged with what looked to be a paper shop towel, not sure how it got there but a new screen and all was good then,
