So I went to start my dc the other day and I hear the starter
spinning but chattering like it's trying to but not engaging the
ring gear. Anything that I need to check before splitting the old
girl? Any tips to replacing that? I have never had one apart in
the middle. Thanks!

You better just slide the starter out and check the bendix drive first.
a five minute job and a new replacement starter pinion drive will take you less than an hour to install in your starter if it is indeed bad.
You may also have some burring on your ring gear, which can be knocked off with a file or a rotary Dremmel tool, thru the starter hole, which will buy you some time.
