Brake problems on 990 D B rown

RETRATION
A while back, I posted that my 990 had both brakes where they wouldn't move. WQell, found out this afternoon, after hitching it to my H and trying to pull it to where I could put a battery charger onto it sos I could reload the new fuel filters that the tractor wouldn't move. Thought about the emergency brake that my boy might have put on, and I had read about in the near worthless (Drivers Guide) I got. Released it, and found I had a lot of play in the R Brake. Way more than I think I should, like 4in travel from back tyo as far forward as it will travel

While measuring the travel of the R Brake, I got down and noticed that the L Brake isn't hooked to anything, and dosent look like it ever was. Theres the emergency brake handle bar that goes from the handle to underneath both brakes, but nothing on the L brake.

Ill go out again and see if theres anything comeing out of the axle on the L hand side.

Saw that there is a rod that goes from the brake rod, across the underneath and to the L side brake pedal. Took a pipe wrench to the rod on the L side, and got it to move easy WITH THE PIPE WRENCH. Its plenty stiff.

Lube it up, it might work, I doubt it but it might. THe brakes on DB's are one of the few bad ways doing things they designed IMO. Just a bear to repair.

This is the Operators manual you want-http://www.ebay.com/itm/DAVID-BROWN-990-SELECTAMATIC-OPERATORS-MANUAL-GTC5C-ORIGINAL-/360789091845?pt=UK_BOI_FarmingEquipment_RL&hash=item5400b4a605

I also looked at the "Drivers Guide" offerings there and they appear about like the Op man I linked to. What exactly is it that you are lacking that you need to know? Maybe an I-T guide would help.

Mainly, Im needing to know if 4in travel on the R side is right, or to much,
And, why they L brake is so stiff, and what I can do about it. Thanks for responding.

If you mean what I think you mean, yes, it's way too long. It's froze up because of lack of use, moisture, dirt, grease, rust, etc. The extra travel may be because something is busted inside the housing.

Look friend, no offense intended, but you REALLY NEED to get at least the I&T repair manual. You appear to be working blind on this thing and DB is British. They do stuff different than us Yanks do. They do it well, but different. You're pulling your hair out over stuff that is addressed in a $25.00 book. The DB shop manual from Case/IH is lots better but you're looking at a couple hundred bucks. Something that might help is finding one of the online parts places that offers at least a partial exploded view of the various parts. I think Case/IH offers an online schematic of the 990 but I've forgotten how to access it. At least then you can see the parts and how they work or where they fit and maybe whats broken.

Okay, I found the Case/IH parts schematics for the 990. This might help- http://partstore.caseih.com/us/parts-search.html#epc::mr53666 If that doesn't work try going to that home page and look up the 990 under parts by model.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, I went through the same thing you are when I got my 990. You also might want to check out the David Brown tractor clubs forum, good guys from all over the world that can help. Some guys from here are on there too.

Go to down "General Discussion" and click on "DBTC Forum". Took me the longest time to figure that out, the header is in David Brown brown and doesn't look like a tab to click on. Proof I'm not too bright.

Well, I got the gas filters on right, and got the tractor primed and running, and the injector pump now works fine. So I think im gaining on it. Now down to just looking at the brakes.
