gen light question

Is it on defore you start the tractor? Genaraters have to be
turning at so many RPMs before they charge, you could use a
smaller pulley

It is on if the key is on but when i start it its on only at very low rpms I forgot to add its a 12 volt

It sounds like it's working exactly as it is supposed to. The light goes out as the generator voltage rises up to battery voltage.

Most of the major US auto manufacturers converted to 12Volt systems in the 54-56 time frame. They changed to using alternators in the early 1960s. Still remember the V8 Buicks were 12V and I-8s were 6V.

Ohh OK thank you. I didn't think 12vlts used generators

Yup, 6, 8, 12, 24V on up. A gen is said to be more rugged than an alternator and do charge at lower RPMS where an alt has to reach a certain speed to start charging. Gens generally charge at a lower rate than alts though and with all the electronics on modern equipment you need more juice to keep the battery up, hence- alternators.
