lesson learned on the DC

Changed the oil on my dc yesterday. As usual I started it and let it get warm before draining it. When I pulled the plug the oil was all creamy from water. REALLY bad creamy. I hadn't changed the oil since I got it, but I checked it regularly and it didn't get many hours so I thought it was ok. Since I always check the oil before starting it the water must have been settled out so it showed full and the oil looked ok. guess that will teach me to pay closer attention.

That seems to be normal for DC's. Condensation from running it in the winter seems to cause the build up of water. Crack the plug some day when it has been sitting for quite a while with the plug on the down hill side and check for antifreeze. If you run it in the winter moving snow cover the radiator seems to help a lot because it warms up better and takes the water out.

When I had my 49 DC I would have to pull the oil screen several times in the winter, to get the ice crystals off of it, then fresh oil. I wish I still had the old girl, as I work for Don L and could find parts for it. Dave

I had the same problem this spring... just after rebuilding the top end in the fall. I thought I had a leaking sleeve o-ring. Turned out to be condensation. It wasn't getting warmed up enough during short winter runs to burn off the water.

The DC is looking forward to plowing this spring!
