My neighbor just bought an 870 tractor. It starts and runs good, but he says when you depress the clutch pedal it kills the engine. When I tried it, the tractor continued to run when the clutch pedal was depressed, but as soon as i attempted to put it in gear the engine died, and quick too. the belts squeaked. He said it didn't seem to bother once the tractor was warmed up. Where should we begin looking? Neither of us are familiar with case tractors. we appreciate any input. thanks

Please do not operate tractor until you or someone has a chance to clean the pilot spools in the control valve. Clutch pack damage can result from operating tractor with that condition. That is a classic example of the C-3 spool sticking. You could check this sites archives for more info or check back here and someone could walk you through the steps if needed. Rod.

As Rod said; Don't try to run it!! In the arcives Rod posted complete details about cleaning and referbishing the RPS34 valve.
His valve details do not adress the removal of the valve from the top of the tranny, but it is totally servicable through the square plate in the platform in front of the seat. After removing the floorboard plate, THEROUGHLY pressure wash the PS valve and top of the tranny around the valve. The gaskets may be bonded very well to the aluminum valve body, so finesse, rather than prybars and chisels are in order, to remove the cover and valve body. Then follow Rods arcive post..
You should really have a service manual also.
When you reinstall the PS valve, there is a bolt torqueing sequence, which HAS to be followed, to insure proper valve function.
