970 case hyd oil change problems

started changing the hyd oil in the 970 the 3rd drain from the front of the tractor had a dowel of a thing and a piece of metal come out of it any idea what this might be? and when removing the old filters the paper shows its supposed to have a spring and a relief valve in each filter and neither one had them, are they necessary?

Your dowel thingy looks like the end of a a starter armature and part of the rtainer washer, but don't know how it got that far back.
Without the cold oil reliefs in the filter housings, you had NO FILTRATION what so ever. The oil was just passing through the filter housing and not the filter.
Good luck.

Looks like someone in the past had starter troubles. Looks like the broken end of the starter motor. The little piece is part of the retainer clip.

I cant tell what that piece is but its possible that's from a problem that occurred a long time ago and is just now showing up.

When I rebuilt my 1370 I found metal hiding from when the tractor was worked on in the 1980's

i looked at the case site and the valves are 445 each so does anyone know where i can get some used ones or someway i could make something to work?

Those are two common problems in this area, far to many people accidently toss the bypass valves with the filters and the racket style starter drive is becoming famous for breaking armatures. Rod.

Oh he is right on the price of the valve. The 1175 I bought did not have the valve in the tranny filter. Case IH wanted over $400 for the valve. Bought a used valve for 40 dollars.

some of the early 970,s had a pto brake linkeage that when the pad was worn down enough it let the whole linkeage fall apart and usually it grabbed the bull gear and rode it around and wedged between gear and floor of axle housing ultimately cracking or busting out the casting. Does your pto brake work? You may want to remove the rear cover and clean it all out and replace brake with updated one while in there.

anyone know where i could get some used ones? i dont even know what they look like other than drawing is it something that could be made fairly easy?
