positive ground again.

So I have a vehicle that had a pos
ground system. The battery was dead
after sitting for a couple days. Not
sure why yet, I'll fiqure that out
later. I hooked up my batt charger.. pos
to pos. neg to neg. As I read everywhere
that's what to do. My batt charger went
nuts with buzzing and after a few
minuets it tripped the breaker on the
charger. So I just unhooked a cable and
hooked up the charger, it seems to be
working now. But why did I have to
unhook the cable. All over I read it
doesn't matter if its a pos ground or
not, pos to pos and neg to neg. Its a
new battery by the way. Thanks

Output of a battery charger knows all about positive and negative, but knows nothing about ground. So positive to positive and negative to netagive, forget about ground is correct.

If charger goes bonkers with battery connected, but charges battery with one cable disconnected you have something shorted, likely in the charging system. Assuming this is a generator and not an alternator system, my first suspect would be a stuck cutout relay. This could have been caused by reversed battery polarity or not having the generator polarized to match the battery polarity.

i agree with the other poster. whatever load was on the battery that killed it was also being seen by the poor charger..

Yup after more messing with it I discovered the regulator contact points were stuck closed I cleaned up the contacts and re-polarized the gen again and I think I'm good now. I will probably look for a new voltage regulator.thanks
