Case 310 Roundnose - Racing Engine

I have a Case 310 Roundnose with an engine that is racing. When I push on the governor lever on the right side of the tractor I can make the engine stop racing. I assume there is a broken spring or something that is keeping the governor from working properly.

Is there someone that could supply me exploded diagrams and pics of the governor rods and assemblies. I would like to see how difficult a job it is to fix this issue without removing the sheet metal first.

I love this tractor and it has been VERY faithful and is not ready to go to the pasture.

Thanks so much.

search archives ON THIS FORUM for governor adjustment ,, the governor arm distance to carburetor is not rite , should be 1/4 inch on most models AND MAKES , throttle closed down fixed serveral that were over reving,,every time they tame down it amazes me

Need some more info to help. Did this just start on a tractor that you use or is it a tractor that has been setting for a while and you are trying to get it going? Hope the picture helps. There is not a spring internally. Be sure the linkage is not sticking and returns when you push the throttle lever up. Lee

First of all check the entire throttle linkage free to slide without binding. Often the throttle rod guide G1226 (above the dist) binds the linkage and must be freed up and oiled regularly. A broken support G1077 can negate all the adjustments also.

There are no throttle linkage springs on the left side of the tractor, although, they seem to get added when throttle return becomes a problem that is too hard to figure out. They usually upset gov balance causing erratic rpm changes and hunting.

On Lee's drawing the pics are the springs that oppose gov rpm increase and assist throttle linkage return to idle. The throttle rod guide and maybe the support if I can find a pic.

1. VT5113 hand throttle return spring. Bell cranks that may need to be freed up and lubed.

2. VT2434 throttle linkage assist return spring. This spring is often missing and usually doesn't have much impact.

3. VT4588 governor spring opposes gov speed increase.

4. G1226 throttle rod guide. Often found dry & binding.

G1077 hand throttle support/friction disc bracket. Can't find a decent pic of the support it is mounted on the steering column behind the battery.
