870 Black Knight

looking for advise. I have an 870 Demonstrator Black Knight that leaked water around the sleeve and the results are a spun main bearing. I love the tractor for baling hay (only 15 acres) and putting around the farm. I have had no problems with it for the last 5 years except for the oil pump. I am having trouble finding a new motor for it. only one I found is $6,000.00 and I hate to spend that kind of money for just the motor. Sounds like the drive train isn't the best in these tractors but I haven't had any problems with mine. I figured I could find one with a bad transmission and buy it for the motor but no luck as of yet. Maybe I should try to sell it as is and get a different tractor. I bought it at a good price to find out later that the previous owner spray bombed it case white instead of black. I did research and found it was the Demonstrator tractor for Stroh, IN Case tractor dealer. Any advise on what I should do?

thanks

Are you close to a machine shop, that could turn the crank, and line bore the block. It may be the way to go. If the tractor was mine I would do that and you know what you have.

When the oil pump went out I had the crank turned about as much as it will go so now it would require a new crank. But still may be worth it.

Chad,

This may just be common sense but if you do get a different crankshaft be sure to line bore the block to get everything straight again. Don

Very true. That is the problem, fix leaking sleeve, replace bearings, line bore block, turn or new crank, gasket kit, etc... I may just want to get a rebuilt engine but that is expensive as well if I can find one. Not sure the tractor is worth putting that much money in it.

decisions decisions lol

Chad I have been going through my lists trying to see if I could help you in some way.

I did find that ct farm has a crank listed for your tractor but No mention of the core charge. You would need your casting number (As long as your crank is not broken it may still have a core value, Please keep this in mind)

Hagan tractor parts which is a salvage dealer has a large selection of used case cranks; 8003650602

Then there is Effingham-Regrinding in Illinois that may be able to help you with either repairing your crank or finding main bearings greater than .030. We have had them grind and repair cranks before; 2173424186

This is my opinion, Some people may balk or bite my head off for suggesting repairing a crank. But your crank is in a 336, 4 cylinder without M&W pistons or a blower. If it was a 451 or a 504 I would shy away but in your case it may be an option.

If I were going to have a crank repaired I would let Effingham-Regrinding do the work.

Your welcome.
I just hope my info helps; I've been down this path myself trying to decide what to do.

Oh forgot to add CT had your crank listed for $824 plus core.

You will need to do a search for CT FARM
