So I have acquired a 1940 Huppmobile, The previous owner had it hooked up negative ground, It had been sitting for several years(20) before I had acquired it, I did get it running but the gauge is showing a discharge when I run it (and I occasionally get a little shock when I'm touching the body and the starter), it is a 6 volt system. I"m thinking it may need to be hooked up Positive ground. My questions are #1 will a vehicle (car or tractor) that is hooked up in reverse still run (like this currently does) and everything works light etc.. . #2 if I do reverse the cables to a positive ground and its not suppose to be that way .. what will I destroy? (if anything. Also I have read about polarizing the generator.. what is that procedure. thanks for your help
 
Kevin the Hupp is indeed + ground (as per my 1940 Motor's manual). It will run with the polarity reversed. The generator won't work and the spark will be weaker. It has to jump from the ground or side electrode to the center, you can observe it if you pull a plug.....I will email you some directions for polarizing and not clutter up the site. I'll take a look at some older stuff and see what makes the most sense.
 
The generator will charge either neg or pos ground. The only component in an old electrical system that is polarity sensitive is the generator cut-out or regulator which ever it may have. The coil will fire either polarity but for the greatest reserve of spark the coil should be wired the same as the battery and would have been from the factory.

If the neg post on the battery goes to ground then the neg post of the coil should go to ground thru the points in the distributor.

Most regulator/cut-outs are labeled as to their intended ground oriention.
 
I can't answer your questions, but that Huppmobile is a very cool machine. Supposedly based on Cord designs and similar to the Graham. Good luck with it and please post some pictures. Don
