Break in oil?

What's your choice for for a turbo 504? There some very reputable calling for Non detergent. Tom

It's one of the Ford vs Chev things. Non detergent oils are exactly that: NON anything. Cylinder pressures with a turbo exclude any non detergent in my mind. No right way, lots of wrong ways. Listen to engine builders you respect, and be sure and ask why they recommend what they do. One thing for sure is NO synthetics for a while. More importantly I feel is the way it's broken in. No idling, no heavy loading, no continuous anything. Varying the load and throttle over a few hours is plenty for the rings and cylinder walls to get friendly then go for your usage. JUST CHANGE the oil frequently. I feel the recommended hours are more for the sales dept then the longevity dept. There are folks that will tell you different brands or makes will go for a longer period of time between maint.......Go figure.

I rebuilt a 148 gas..I know not the same. 1st oil was Shell 30 as a break-in (not Non detergent) Its the only oil I have ever used in this new engine. I asked a reliable engine builder he told me to break it in with what it will use

Put in 30w diesel engine oil and take it out and work it. Change it at 50 hours if you're nice, 100 hours if you are not.

Eric I agree, CASE always suggested 30w for break-in of the 504's. When the 70 series were new I was told they shipped those tractors out with a 20w non detergent oil in them. That was to be changed in 20-25 hrs. Rod.
