I read somewhere about nav gas not deteriorating like regular gas when sitting around in old equipment. My tractors don"t get enough use to keep fresh gas in the system. I have found even using stabilizer the tanks smell. I was told premium car gas is better than regular but if nav gas is till better I"ll work at getting some.
Thanks
Dave

Oh yea, it's good stuff (or it use to be) it was spendy but things ran really nice on aviation gas. How much is it now?

It's very high in octane, used to be around 106. It's different chemically though. Just some thoughts from my using it for quite a few years with automotive competition engines. In the late 70s with the first fuel crisis and the lowering of fuel octanes because of the low compression ratios early emissions systems required, and the dropping of lead the few quality racing gas supplies dryed up. Sunonco and Union 76 were the best. The specific gravity of Avgas is different, it will affect float levels and mixtures. It's also very volitle and will evaporate quickly. We couldn't get a reading off a fuel cell dipstick for example as it would be gone that quick. We used this in professional road racing where I was involved with Porsche competition. I guess the long and short is that it's different. I don't feel it will effect our older tractors, except for the volatility issue. Without a sealed tank you'll find it going away very quickly through the cap vent.

Thank you for the comments. I think I'll have to come up with a simple way to drain the tanks every fall. Maybe the loose old gas caps are part of the problem.

here in north western arkansas, in the river valley area, we have available what they are calling clear gas. There is no ethinol. it's about 12 cents higher but if is not gumming up my carbs in everything and they have more power and get better milage. My supplier explained the process of producing it like this, To make all blends of fuel the refinary begins with 2 levels of octain fuel with no ethinol in either one. To get the 87 oct. they add the ethinol,5,10 o/o. For the clear, they add enough of the high octain non ethinol to the low octain base fuel and "wallah" non ethinol 87 0ctain fuel that my old vac loves. My supplier may have sold me a bill of goods but my gas burners are as happy with it as I am. with my wifes jeep she not only no longer has to shift down here in the hills but gets better millage too.
