I'm going to look at what I think is a Case 300 this weekend. The only mechanical fault is a slow leak in the lift. The owner says the tractor must be split to fix it. Is it the same as a 530 where the cylinder under the seat is where the leak usually is and the tractor doesn't have to be split? He wants 1,500 for it, a bush hog & box blade. Anything else to look for especially on the 300? Thanks!

If the lift piston seals are leaking there will be oil transfer from the torque tube sump to the transmission case. You can check the seals by putting some weight on the lift and see if it leaks down over night. Piston is in the assembly under the seat, just pull the cover and it comes out as a unit.

The next most likely oil migration source is through the pto shaft/main shaft seal located at the front of differential cavity. While you have the lift piston assembly out check for oil leakage through the seal. Ensure the torque tube sump is full and it helps to run the engine a few minutes and shutdown, dry the seal area and watch for oil seepage. The slightest smear of oil leak will be a lot of oil over time. No spilt reqd, just pull the pto assembly off the back, drive shaft comes out with it.

The least likely leak is the transmission main drive shaft O.D. seal at the front of the transmission. Requires split.

Pic#1 is a view of the pto shaft seal in the differential cavity after you pull the lift piston assembly.

Pic#2 is the pto factory shaft seal. The original seal was double-lipped and obsolete. You'll need to replace it with 2 single lip seals. I'll look up the p/n of the seals I use if you need it.

Pic#3 is new seals installed.

Thanks a bunch, Joe! Your explanation and pix of the job make it easy for me to understand. I"ll let you know if I need the part number. Jacques

Yeah, C. Amick, it does sound good. I know the owner and he bought the outfit to use on a hunting lease he no longer has and doesn't need it now. I've already got a 530 but it's hard to pass this up if there aren't any other big fixes. Jacques
