A Mechanics Memories, All The 1370 Rear End Jobs.

For Twenty years I stayed busy doing several 1370 rearend jobs every year. The nickname 1370 Rod was started by customers visiting the shop and always seen me working on 1370's years ago. 12+1570's and 23+2590's required similar repairs but I fixed more 13's than anything, hands down. Broken C2-C3 bolts, ring+pinion's, differential cages broken and worn out, diff. thrust washers gone, final drive sun gears worn and chipped with damaged plant. gears, axle housing and trans housings broken because of sun gear tooth breakage. Ah the good old days. Rarely do I see those kinds of failures nowadays simply because these good ole workhorses are not the main tillage tractor anymore. In the past 2 years I have repaired my 1270, a 1370 and this 1570 all with multiple failures occurring leading to some hefty repair bills. This tractor with 7500 hrs had been the main horse for all its years and the rearend had never been touched. I fear these things would need replacing before it was ever taken apart. Broken bolts was it reason to tear into it, sun shaft, ring and pinion, sun gears and diff. thrust washers were found later. This owner was lucky because the diff cage was still good even with thrust washers gone and the LH final drive sun gear had lost huge chunks easily capable of cracking axle housing and trans case. I know the days of this kind of repairs are numbered as these tractors are retired from full time duty and owners simply not willing to invest large dollars in tractors of this age. But the few I fix will always remind me of the 70's and 80's when those jobs bought a lot of groceries for us repair guys. Rod.

I hope that pinion bearing is good. When I rebuilt my 1370 my bearing had a chunk out of a roller and case wanted $700 for the bearing. luckily I found a bearing for $350 from a local supplier. it was their last one.

Rod do you have a special stand for the rear end that allows you to pull the axle housings?

Hi Interesting blast from the past there. I worked in a wreckers. my only involvement with these was they got hauled in when the chunks came out the bottom of the housings.
Would the cause of this be guys running up and down the powershift with a tiller buried up to the frame, and full bore throttle?.

I guess you should of been a Massey mechanic, according to the guys on the massey board this kinda stuff don"t happen to 1135 and 55 tractors!.
It would of been a pretty easy and boring job working for MF just changing oil /servicing and doing PDI on new equipment L.O.L.
Regards Robert

Steve I think the main cause was that great engine bolted in front of the trans. These trans could give some darn good service, run the tractor tillage speed 5 + mph, do not weight them down and leave the fuel setting alone. Now no one ever messed with that did they! LOL, Rod.

Yep, It is called bottle jacks. The lifting tool for the wheels and axles is the hoist on casters. Even in town I never used splitting stands on these tractors. I bet I have done close to a 100 with exactly what you see here. Rod.

We had some early white 13's with sun gear damage show up with as few as 500 hrs on them. Heck there was 2290's with ring and pinion damage before 1000 hrs. Case had some tractors released with poor quality parts, but it was not just them, the red and green camps produced stuff they won't do any bragging about either. Rod.

Yeah sure. Friend of the family was a die-hard Massey Guy. He owned an 1100, 1130, 1135, 1150, and an 1155.

To my knowledge the 1100 never had a wrench turned on it of any kind. The 1130 had complete rear end issues and was eventually fixed but traded off on the 1135 which also had to have the rear end totally rebuilt just like the 1130 tractor before it. The 1150 also ended up needing some rear end work but it was not as major as the 1130 or 1135 repairs in comparison. I do not think the 1155 required any rear end work, but he did not own it all that long either before selling out either.

Rod if you've made a living splitting 1370's using hyd bottle jacks and a gantry crane then your a better man than I am.

When I split my 1370 I had a gantry crane to remove the tires. I the used a backhoe to set the tire/rims outside. A cherry picker for the rear axle housings. I had a homemade stand on rollers to split the rear end from the tractor. Hoist stands to support the cab. and a ton of blocking to support the engine.

I did it that way because my health is so bad I don't have the strength to wrestle the stuff around anymore

I just role the tractor apart with a floor jack attached to the drawbar. I always remove axle and wheel as a unit. Have many little tricks that you learn through the decades. Easy job unless they have 42 in tires pushed up tight against the cab. Rod.

Rod interesting. I do not see that damage to those tractors here, other than the broken PS bolts. I have a 1370 I parted out 15 years ago, I still have the rear end, I have never needed anything out of it. I have threated hauling it for scrap.

Hi
When i posted this comment on the massey board in reply to somebody asking about buying an 1135 or 55 you should of heard the rude replies, that there was never any problems with those series trannys and I knew nothing.
Funny thing was at the time I just re built one. all the wreckers had them in with same problems. I ended up with used parts from 5 or more tractors to make mine work. The yard I had worked in had 20 >or more in a line with smashed rear end components.
That being 1 yard tells a tale to, the other yards had quite a few as well.
Guess they are not as perfect as guys think L.O.L.
Regards Robert

I got a 1370 setting in the barn right now with a bad sun gear. Motor was replaced with a 2290 engine . I really liked this tractor. Now the brakes and all hydros are acting stupid because of that sun gear. Guess I should sell it or part it out.

I lived with that kind of damage on the red ones, then Case and lastly Deere. Load them down, turn them up, can't have those tires slipping. All manufactures were preaching for years that if you could not pull your implement at five miles per hour at factory advertised horse power you should lighten the load.

Oh gosh don't do that. 15 years ago I would have driven over and relieved you of the entire rear end. Rarely do I work on these anymore but you never know. Each one I do I think might be the last. I parted out a 1370 two springs ago and luckily have sold nearly everything but the engine which I want to put in the 1470 someday. Keep the ring gear and plantetary for the P shift and the entire differential assy if you are ever going to scrap that rearend. If I ever get another job on a 12 or 13 like this I will be calling. Rod.
