530 case starter problems

The starter works perfect till the engine tries to start then the bendix kicks out and starts grinding. As long as the engine does not try to fire, the bendix will stay engaged and work fine. I have a brand new batt fully charged with 950 cca. Any ideas? It has the 188 diesel engine

I would start with having the starter rebuilt a bendix may fix it but you may need bushing brushes ect as well

Nutty has it right starter drive is bad. Nows the time to have the whole thing gone through. jstpa

I am gonna have it built anyway I just can"t understand why the drive would disengage from the flywheel with the solenoid holding it in.

they get worn and do that, I have seen that condition many times

It actually isn't disengaging from the flywheel . The drive will have either a roller clutch or Sprague clutch built into it. it free spins one direction and locks up the other. What happens is when that clutch gets worn , just about the time it's ready to fire and the compression is at its highest, the clutch in the drive lets loose. but the gear is still engaged with the flywheel, its just free spinning at that point If you have it rebuilt ask them to put a ratchet drive on it and you'll probably never have the problem again. jstpa
