Deck Repair

No shows or pulls for a while so my wife suggested I fix a couple bad boards in our deck. I thought no problem an easy fix! Well it was an easy fix untill I started removing the bad boards and then there was more and more bad boards!! I need to re-do the whole deck but I was hoping to patch it for at least a year or two.

that rim joist thats nailed/bolted to the house is in poor shape also. Water has no place to go but soak in, rotting the board and the siding. You've opened a can of worms for sure. I'm sure you'd rather be working on a tractor. gobble

You got that right. I'm screwing the new boards down. I'll have to pull all of them sooner or later this year or next. All the 4x6 joists underneith are marginal. They did not use treated timbers when the deck was built. Bought the place a year and a half ago and got a good price due to the deck needing replaced.

Dick,

A project to "replace a few boards" on our deck resulted in a complete rebuild this week here as well. Fortunately the frame remained in very good condition, but everything else was replaced. Instead of fun in the sun for spring break, we enjoyed a family project, and Mrs Young and my youngest daughter pitched right in to help. It turns out my 15 year old daughter is actually a pretty good carpenter. She liked the building and fitting a whole lot better than the demolition.

I have built 6 decks total, 4 for myself.
I remember reading somewhere that cedar will last 20 years if you take care of it, PT wood will last 15 years. I was in Home Depot buying a bag of plaster yesterday, Havent been in HD in a long time cause when I go there I spent more than I need too. Anyway, There was this new plastic decking, 3.30 per Lineal foot, Looks super nice, The boards look like wood, I guess it would be $7 per sq. foot. I have not priced PT wood or Cedar planks in years so I do not know the price difference of the new plastic deck stuff to real wood. The plastic deck stuff is likely twice the cost of cedar, I built by back deck 10 years ago with cedar top boards. My deck still looks good I painted it last year with Sherwin Williams deck paint.....That crap was $40 per gallon I think.
I know that this may sounds real dumb but what about galvanized steel grid for a deck material? The same stuff that you would use on a mezzanine in an industrial building? You just cannot walk on it barefoot.
In 1988 By dad and I built a deck at his house, I was 20 YO then, and his deck has held up well.....A couple boards had to be replaced, no big deal. All PT wood too.

Think twice about using the synthetic or plastic type "planking." They absorb the sun's heat and not only can't you walk on them barefoot they radiate back up so bad you can't really sit there in July or August in the afternoon.........
