foaming hyd fluid

Hello. Has anyone had the problem with hyd. oil foaming so bad on a VAC that it pumps the oil out of the sump vent? I'm thinking it's sucking in air somewhere. Thanks, Mike.

good article on hyd fluid foaming, apparently it is a common problem and can have many causes.

when you solved the problem, please post what steps solved the problem.

Part of the problem is just cheap oil. The higher grade brands such as Hytrans and HyGuard have anti-foaming agents in them to keep this from happening. Our local TSC has some generic hydraulic oil that's usually $40 a bucket but doesn't have a lot of the additives to prevent foaming and wear. One year the farm budget was shot and I used TSC universal hydraulic fluid and it foamed out the shifter on a couple tractors I had.

One other thing is moisture. It will make the oil milky and cause it to foam up much like a whisk does in the kitchen. Beat the oil enough with the gears and it'll turn into a big white foamy mess.
