Case 310 b (Starts only on starting fluid-dies) Help!!!

Older case 310b. We have been having starting problems. It ran for 100 ft and then died and would start and run for a few mins. Then died and wouldn't start at all except on starting fluid and then dies after that's gone. Checked and verified its getting fuel to carb. Replaced old carb. New spark plugs, wires, distributer, battery. ONLY STARTS AND RUNS UNTIL Starting fluid is gone when sprayed into carb. We had it apart for awhile and it rained. Oil had water in it, flushed oil. Pulled exhaust/intake manifold because it looks bad and gasket could be leaking. Seems that there isn't enough vacuum to suck in the fuel? How do you tell if the valves are burnt up? HELP!! We are pretty good with equipment repair but this seems to be a engine issues and we are stumped.

Likely water in the gas tank. The unit would run until the gas gets shook up enough to spill the water over the outlet lip until the sediment bowl is full, then it won't run anymore. Take the sediment bowl off and empty it, and also the carb bowl now. Try it again, but if that's the problem it will happen again right soon. I fight that problem a lot on my 311 and my IH350U.

Try running your gas line to a plastic gas can with clean gas .if that doesn't do it. there is plenty of members on the forum with a great deal of knowledge who will figure it out. Good luck

Check to see if air is pulled into carb during cranking. My 310 had bad head gasket and stuck valves wouldn't start even with starting fluid. Warning if valves stuck they can get bent. I pulled cover off valves and checked each valve by manually pushing down on each rocker arm and verifying it moved free. Good luck

just a shot in the dark but how bout the main suction jet or the float valve is sticking and in need of a rebuid kit for the carb good luck Bob

do you have a zenith carb ??sounds like my problem with the DC, left it set for over a year ,and now the dc wants to get even with me for neglectin it ... , starts and It Runs fine until it suks all the gas out of the breather,,, and will continue runnin longer if I place my hand on the breather inlet ,, yow after couple minutes ,,been flooding it with carb cleaner in all jets ,, no good yet has come from that ,,gonna have to take it apart , I guess ,and look for gunky string of crud someplace ,,. LOl,

just a couple thoughts:
check and make sure the battery has the positive post grounded. (dunno if it'd spin over backwards leading to low vacuum)
Check that the choke cable is set so the choke opens/closes properly
On mine the screw holding the tab over the cable on the carb loosens up changing the range of travel for the choke. Leading to hard starts and rough running.

If it will run on starting fluid it will run on gas if it is getting any. Sounds like you are not getting any inside of carb. I just this morning took a carb apart that has set all winter and had two small jets pluged with rust and had some water in bowel. Ran cutting torch tip cleaner drils through them and blowed them out good with air. Runs fine now. Check and make sure you are not getting ny water out of gas tank. Roy G.

I agree with water in the gas. Pull the plug on the bottom of the carb and see what comes out. Especially since you had water in the oil, either from condensation or rain, you could also have gotten rain or condensation in the gas tank. Experience speaking. Hours spent trying to find mechanical problems only to find water in the gas. And water doesn't burn worth a darn. ADB
