looking at a 1410 case tractor DB wondering if there are any comments re this model,is the engine troublesome or ok,any common problems? THANKS

I would look it over very closely, and find all the info you can about it's previous life.
These were good tractors if they had a good home and were well cared for. That being said, if they were neglected and not serviced regularly, including cleaning the radiator and air filter regularly, you will be buying a basket full of trouble.

Like Loren said, it is 40 years old... Being British, some oil leaks are totally normal(oil leaking at the head gasket, or exhaust manifold are bad). Being British and having a Lucas electrical system, electrical stuff not working is normal, and expected.

All DB hydraulics are temperamental if not maintained, but fixable.

If it starts good when cold, and hydraulics work I wouldn't be to afraid of it at the right price. Electrics working, no rust issues, and minimal oil leaks would be a good indicator of previous care.

The 4/55T engine is my favorite of all the DB engines.

The only thing i can add over what has been said. Is ask him how often they changed the oil in the injection pump. This is a must on those pumps and very very costly if neglected. If he says he didnt be very carefull with what you give for it.

More good advise...

I checked on that with my local shop, they get $600ish exchange(assuming you haven't torn you pump apart) for a 4 cylinder Simms. Much more for a a Bosch.

Thad, have you ever installed a Bosch PE from a 7/870 onto a Simms equipped DB? I have a project in mind, and a spare pump.

Wow 600 would be a buy in my area. Most of the ones i
have seen abused had a bad govenor and cam in the pump
from lack of oil. I have a 1212 in for a power shift job i
couldnt get the kill lever on the pump to move without
great force. Drained the fuel and oil mix from the pump
filled it up with clean oil and started it. The kill lever freed
up then. I thought about building one into a puller with a
70 series pump just never went farther than a idea.
