I see the post below here about a 1490, I have the same questions so I will just follow the replies there. One extra question I have, we are going to be looking at one in the next couple of weeks (haven't seen it yet) with a loader. Here's the question, can this tractor handle a 1200 pound round bale OK and safely (assuming the hydraulic system is up to snuff)?
 
I think it more depends on your loader than the tractor. With the factory loader(74L) on my 4x4 1494(same tractor as a 1490), I move 2000 pound pallets pretty regularly. It handles them fine, but I don't go looking for ditches to beat it across with a heavy load on it. I do occasionally move 3000 pound pallets, but that makes the front tires really squat, and is at the limit of hydraulic pressure with the relief valve set to factory specs.

If a 2 wheel drive, the front axle is very well made, but you will need some weight on the back.
 
Thanks for the info. I'm not exactly familiar with the transmission on these tractors, I see the data sheet said 3-speed with four ranges, I've heard of something called Case-O-Matic or Power-Shift(whatever those might refer to) .... perhaps the 1490 has something similar?
 
The 1490 could be had 2 different ways.

3 speed with reverse range transmission, with a 4 speed powershift within each range. The trade name for this was a "Hydrashift" 12 forward speeds 3 reverse. The 4 speed is on the dash.

The other is a 2 speed High/Low range, with a 2 speed underdrive, With a partially synchronized 3 speed with reverse. 12 F, 4 reverse. The two 2 speeds are shifted by your left ankle.

For a loader I would prefer the syncro over the Hydrashift because the Hydra starts out in 1st every time you push in the clutch, then shifts up through the higher gears to get to where you left it.
