story of a L Case

I’m not really trying to start a argument , ( will maybe I am) but this is to all you that want to be so correct on ser.# and date of manufacture. This is a story about my 1929 L Case. I wrote some of this a long time ago.
In the late summer (Aug. or Sept.) of 1928 at the Cheyenne County Fair in Sidney, Nebraska The Case company had two L Cases on display. The way they did this was to have them running in a circle with no one on the tractor. No tractor at that time could do that. My grandpa liked them (at that time he was running a Cross mount Case and a Hart-Parr tractor) He bought one of them ( the one I still have) as I said this was in the late summer of 1928. He may not have had it delivered to his farm until the early spring of 1929,(picture of him on it was taken in the spring of 1929) another picture of it at harvest of 1929. I write this because so many of you insisted that no 29L was made until the summer of 1929. Also I was told by letter from case company ( I lost the letter-darn-) that the ser.# shows it was made in the first run. Also some of you dispute this. Maybe case did not keep good records back than but my dates on my tractor are right..

The fact that you have pictures with dates make the evidence you have very powerful. Taking pictures and albuming those pictures back then was important to them. Not like todays phones or even yesteryears brownies. Film and developing were costly. So you'll get no argument from me. I'm A Believer. Love the cab. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. gobble

Jimmy you will get argument from me, I have had discussions with people that tell me no 1270/1370 tractors were made in 71, well we got one of each in in fall of 71, I know this as fact as our shop burned to the ground in Jan of 72 and I was the one who unloaded and did the predelivery on those two and it was at our original dealership, after the fire we moved to a new location, like you I was there and my mind still works well most days lol

I believe you jimmie ,,,you may have one of the 1928 protoptypes ,,.. wanna tell me how the tractors went in a circle without a driver>?

I"m a believer, eyewitness and recorded dates are pretty solid.

What I find most amazing, and very cool, is that this L has been in your family for 85+ years!!!!!! That"s amazing, and great!

Model year 1929 made in 1928. If yours is a 1928 what is my SN 300298? Mine would be the 48th one made as they started at 50. The first and fourth minus 3 makes them both 29's. Will you argue that yours is older than mine?

Not at all. I was also told they put the ser.#"s on after the run. Maybe they made 50 or more in the first run in 1928. . I don"t know that. I do know mine was one of the first two sold in our county in Aug. or Sept. of 1928. For the guy who wanted to know about running in a circle . Just throw a chain over the steering wheel and jump off.. The cab my dad made out of a old car , run it that way for about 6 years.

Maybe the two numbers after the first number don't mean a thing . You said they started at 50 , you must mean 250. If that is right mine would be newer as mine is 252 the second one made. Are we wild guessing? If the second two number were in order of made mine would be number 18.

The picture with the cab and the generator shows they took a lot of pride in their tractor, as does the fact that the took the time and money to take photos

Jimmie, are the pictures above of the "L" taken on the same farmstead?

I sure enjoyed the pics and story Jimmie

As to timeline! The first picture of my grandpa in 1929 was taken 9 mi. west of Lorenzo NE. The one with me in the cab was in the early spring of 1939 and I was 4. it was taken in Lorenzo NE a half block north from where I live now and the last pic was taken where I live now (on the south edge of Lorenzo. I think Dad said the cab was from a old ford.

You need to get your Full Steam Ahead book out. Read pages 149 to 159. It tells the entire story of the development of the L. The back of the book shows all the production numbers by years. For your information the first and fourth digits minus 3 is the production year, and the balance of the number is the tractor production number. Yours is tractor #1852. Mine is #298. FYI mine is a C, and I read somewhere that the first 250 were L's and C production started at #250. It is very possible that 1929 model tractors were made in 1928. Much like Ford Mo CO used to start making the new year cars on Sept first of the previous year. My guess is that it is much earlier than that now to try to get the new models out before the other guys.
