ignition on 430

working on my 430 case. it usually starts quite good but does not like it much if over choked. points were burnt so new points and condenser plus a new dist cap. now it runs worse than before if it starts does not run on all cyls. i also changed the rotor previous to this. such a simple system but it is really confussing me. compression tested very good. what am i doing wrong?

check the last thing you fixed if it is worse Point gap may be incorrect or wires not in cap good or incorrect places and new parts are not always better.

Make sure the metal cap over the points is properly clocked and seated, in the distributor housing, and the distributor cap is setting properly on top of the metal cap.

i set points to .020 as it says on engine. sure i got cap on rite. my manual is not very good. when i got the tractor someone had put an alternator in it. it is on 12 volts neg ground is that correct? also can i use a lit to time it?

Brian, I am not sure if your rotor has a clip in the space [knoch ] that goes over the distributor shaft. If it is missing it will cause engine to run bad, should be tight. Check your rotation of the distributor an make sure your wires are correct. I have also seen a bad coil and new parts cause this problem. Jerry
