vac positive or negative ground

Hi guys, I have a 1948 vac case and have a question regarding the battery hook up. They are supposed to be 6 volt positive ground right? It is hooked up as negative ground and the negative wire from the coil is going to the distributer. I am putting in a new battery and and want everything hooked up right. If I switch it back to positive ground do I re-polorize the generator. If so, how do I do that. I also would have to switch back the distributer wire to positive on the coil. What else do I have to do? Thanks in advance for all of your help.

It apparently has been running with it configured for negative ground.

From an electrical standpoint there is no reason to switch back to positive ground. Install the battery with negative ground and it will be right for your configuration.

VAC's were originally positive ground. The only piece in the electrical system that is polarity sensitive is the voltage regulator/cutout relay. You need to wire it so your regulator is happy. If it is positive ground then that is how it should be run.

Also the ammeter is polarity sensitive. It really doesn't care, it will just read discharge when it is charging, and vice versa. If it works right now I would leave it neg Ground.

Thanks guys. How do I know what my voltage regulator/cutout relay is set up for? I just want to make sure every thing is correct and working. Is there any test for the regulator/cutout relay to know if they are neg or pos ground?
