What would a few small brass flakes in the oil indicate when the oil was drained for a change? Are these from a filter, a gasket, is this terrible, normal, can someone explain?

Are you talking engine oil or tranny oil? What model tractor? IF it is in the tranny, it could be differential thrust bearings, clutch discs, if Power Shift trans, if in engine oil, thrust bearings on crank, or bearing goung bad. More info would help the diagnosis.

bearings are shot! better get your wallet out and look into an overhaul kit. the more you run it the worse it may get and damage other parts.

If its the center main its wont be as easy as changing the bearings. The crank will need turned so you are looking at a major oh if that is the problem. Believe it or not the cranks get a little warping in them. The crank will be badly worn and rough on one half of the center main. Im not saying that this is the trouble but I have seen it many times. If it runs and has no knock from a loose rod I will say this is what its from. Thad

Have someone who knows what they are doing look at it. (I'm not saying you don't know) Drop the oil pan and pressurize the cooling system. There may be a sleeve or O-ring leaking coolant. Someone could have dumped it full of stop leak and dumped the tractor.
