SC Grill Screen Question

Was the grill screen supposed to be installed on the inside or outside of the grill? I have seen it both ways, but I do not remember seeing any official case pictures with it on the outside.

My son just bought a wide front 48 SC and all original screen on the outside. I have an all original 50 SC with the screen on the inside. I think on the inside would cover most SC screens.

Inside would seem odd with no easy way to clean. I would think that to be just like having just the radiator uncovered. It gets plugged with crap and you over heat. The parts book seems to shows it flat which would lead me to think on the inside. I have only found screens that were mounted on the outside and always are was beat up. For me my search continues.

Looking at a S Series manual here and shows screens on the inside.

Mine is on the outside (1949). Could Case have made two different screens or changed it on the later models?
