test driving a 70 series, checklist?

I know about putting the 3pt in raised position, and then getting off the tractor and manually lifting the lift arm another inch or two, to make sure that relief valve is working. What other tips, tricks, advice do you have on a 970 when you go to the dealer and test drive it?

8 speed or power shift? The 8 just listen for bad sounds nasty leaks be nice if you can sneak an oil sample or two. Ask for a hydraulic flow test and a dyno. A dealer should be happy to do that if it makes the sale. It will grind into gear if you don't hold the pedal down for several seconds. And then may butt tooth.

Power shift, all the above plus the grunt when you push the clutch in. Shouldn't grind gears, crisp shifts try to stop the tractor in each PS shift point with brakes. Should be kinda whiny in reverse. The planets are screaming there. Tom

P.S. I am sure I missed several things.

Great, did not know the dealer would dyno and do a flow test for free. Will ask them.
It is an open station Powershift.

In addition, if it is an older Desert Sand 970,(would check it no matter what year) check the rear end housing casting directly under the bull gear or directly under the axle centerline for cracks or repairs/welds. What happens is the pto brake pad will wear off far enough that it lets slack in the whole arm assy and it comes loose and will ride the bull gear around and wedge between gear and housing and will break it.

That 3 pt problem only applys to dual speed pto 90,94,96 series tractors, and maybe the 3294. There is no relief for the hitch system, but the hitch has to cancel before it reaches maximum lift height. An inch or two like you said. I don't know of this being a problem on 70 series tractors.
