930 C/K Won't shift to high range.

Yesterday I was square baling with the 930 in 1 high. All was going well. I stopped to pick up a bale lying in the field. I put the high/low in neutral. When I got back on the tractor a minute later it would just grind when I try to put it in high. It's not in the linkage. Goes into low just fine. When I put the transmission in neutral it kinda goes in part way but when I let the clutch out it grinds and pops out of high right away. I'm thinking the high speed gear must be spinning on the power shaft when the shift collar is in neutral. I know these high low gears can weld to the shaft. All too well. I only have about 20 hours on this machine since I was in that transmission. Any ideas??

A Case mech. told us years ago to never use the range lever for shifting the main trans. Neighbor had a new 930 and factory cab with an Uncle running the tractor and couldn't find 4th gear. Neighbor told him to use hi-low lever to shift. 3rd day it was in the shop having the hi-low idler repaired on a new 50 hour tractor.

If a gear was welded to the shaft it would drive in with the range lever in neutral and lock up in the range that was not welded, those shifters just clamp to the actuating shaft and have been known to slip, that is the first thing I would check.

I don't use the high low often. I just used it that particular time
to put tractor in neutral. Now that I review the book Mel is
correct. It would be engaged if the gear was welded. I bought
the tractor in that condition. Cut the gear off and replaced shaft
collars and gears. I'm still a little unclear what's wrong. If the
gear is grinding to go into high something must be spinning
that shouldn't be??

Unless I'm missing something here I would remove the top cover, put the range shifter in neutral and see if the sliding collar is centered on its hub, then manually shift it each way to check for proper engagement.

The shifter just clamps to its shaft and can move if not tightened enough. Grinding against the teeth and kicking out tells me it's not engaging fully. The top cover is fairly easy to get off and that is your first move toward diagnosing this problem.

Grinding while shifting is not an issue unless you have a clutch problem as the gear train in those tractors is heavy and takes a little bit to stop once the pedal is pressed. If the gears are not stopping at all that's another issue entirely.
