830 Case clutch

I replaced the clutch & pressure plate, throw-out brg., & input shaft 5 months ago on this 830 diesel which worked smooth & well till a month or so ago when my son was mowing with it and the clutch wouldn"t release.
The plate seems to be operating as it did and no adjustment helps. It will have to come apart again but I wonder if any of you Case experts have run across this type of problem? Could there be some type of wear problem I missed? Thanks.

It sounds like your son rode the clutch pedal and destroyed the throwout bearing or the fork that actuates the throwout bearing failed.
Also, did you install the new throwout bearing facing in the proper direction?

Yeah, the son is a cowboy but he's had lots of tractor experience especially with this one. The throw out berg. is good as is the actuating leaver.
The movement of the PP levers seems to be good. I don't see how the throw out could be put in wrong on this model but I've seen stranger things.
Maybe I'll be surprised when it comes apart. Thanks for your input

Hi - I bought an 830 a few years ago that had a new clutch and the works fitted the same as yours about 100 hours previously, and it was a Hay tractor too. When I got the tractor the clutch was slipping in the high gears and under a heavy load. There was no point in adjusting the external linkage as the Throwout bearing assembly was back hard against the rear part of the clutch/gearbox housing. To get the tractor going, I had to adjust the fingers to get clearance with the throwout bearing. I still use it for light work, but from what I can find out there was very little adjustment when the new clutch was fitted. I was told that there were different thicknesses of the driven plates as well as different thickness pads on the Ceramic clutches. Some throwout bearings are also much deeper, so when you add them all up, you can lose most of your adjustment. Good Luck - Kav

I've had similar problems and it turned out several times the previous clutch had worn grooves in the input shaft and if the disk would wear some it would snap into the worn splines and stick there. Just had this happen on a VAI.

I would split it and have the flywheel "step distance" measured and brought back to new spec. If the flywheel is worn badly the pressure plate has to extend further to reach the disc causing the fingers to extend further.

I was not aware of the different thicknesses of the driving discs and have used either without any changes to finger dimension. Clutch shaft wear could be an issues as stated so should be eliminated as a cause while apart.

I would look at the flywheel before condemning anything else.

Agree, checking flywheel step spec is crucial plus finger height in a clutch job, but poster stated clutch worked fine for four months? regards john.

dawg,

good point, sounds like one of those things that we'll just have to see when it is split, something loose and floating around is a definate possibility.
