830 power steering

I have an 831 general purpose diesel case-o-matic with power steering. It steers very hard. The power steering is full of fluid. How do I know if I need a new pump or rebuild the power steering unit itself? How do could I check the output pressure and what should it be. How hard is it to rebuild the unit itself? I have seen rebuilt units, but they are pricey. thanks for any help and advice. Rick

Does it sound like it's starving for fluid?? There's a filter in the reservoir, maybe plugged?? I can steer my 830 with one finger. Ive had it for 33 years and has never given any trouble.

I have checked that and the filter seems fine and full of fluid. It just feels like there is no power assist.I do have a loader on it, which I know adds a lot of weight to the front end.

There are other components to the steering that could be looked at as well. The bearings in the vertical spindel could be shot, or dry. Jack the front of the tractor up, and see how free the steering is with no weight on it. The bushing directly below the steering wheel can also get tight, or sieze if the tractor is left out in the rain often. Lots of places to look besides the steering pump, and everthing needs to work freely ot give good service. Bruce
