Case hydraulics

I have a 1953 case VAC. Finally thought I had the hydraulics working, but now fluid is leaking badly where in the rear, where the piston housing joins the control arm. Does anyone know of a rebuild kit? or where do I start?

Most all leaks on the control valve side of the rockshaft is the result of plugged leak-off tubing and/or piston seal leakage in excess of tubing capacity.

The vent-leak off tubing conveys piston seal leak-bye back to the torque tube. If the tube is plugged or the leak-bye is beyond the capacity of the tubing, oil level rises in the rockshaft housing and leaks out the control valve side which has no seal or gasket.

To measure piston seal leakage, pull the vent-leak off tubing off at the fitting. Cycle the hitch up and down about 10 times to void the collected oil in the rockshaft housing. Put the draft arms up with some weight. You should be down to a slow, intermittent drip or the piston seal needs changed.

1953 VAC should have 2 O-rings for piston seals unless it has been changed back to the older leather cup piston. Very easy fix if that is the problem.

That"s about it, unbolt the cylinder, lift it off the piston will be inside. The piston and rod are not connected, rod just rests in the piston socket. Blow the piston out with puff of air at the hyd fitting.

O-rings are not huge, just around 4" as I remember it. Any hydraulic shop can fix you up for less than a saw buck.

I can look up the current Case p/n if you want to go that route. Case still had them available a couple of years ago, no different than what you can buy elsewhere.

The control valve and release valve stem seals wear and leak. I don"t know if Case has seal kits still avail.

The body of the depth control block is 2 halves, and if original has a lead gasket that will leak if the 2 halves vibrate loose. Probably won"t be able stop the leak by tightening the fasteners. Replace with a regular paper gasket material.
