1896 front axle question

Can't tell what I'm overlooking here so need some help. The picture shows the front axle that I need to move in for 30" rows - needs to go in two holes. As you can see, the tie rod only shows one hole left while the axle has two. What has happened here? The other side is correct as it has two holes left in both the axle and the tie rod. Everything else appears correct.

It will work slid in One hole. That's where mine is and I plant, cultivate and side dress 30s with it

What does the other side of the front axle look like? it is possible that at some time in the past that the tie rod end on the other end has been changed and they set it incorrectly causing this to be wrong. There are a couple other things that could cause your problem as well but I'd start by checking that.

There are just a few threads showing on the tie rod end on the other side, so can't take up much there, certainly not two inches. I've had several people look at it, including the dealer mechanic, and nobody has a clear answer. The cylinder is mounted to the axle so I can't just turn the steering wheel as I slide the axle as the other wheel will turn. Also, I FORGOT TO MENTION, that it doesn't turn very sharp to the left and turns quite sharp to the right. This is consistent with the cylinder currently being exposed quite a bit as it sits straight and so has more travel to move in that direction.

take a look at the arms that bolt on top of the spindles that the tie rod ends bolt to. Is one of them indexed in towards the tractor centerline more than the other? the one in the picture seems like its in farther than it should be given the tire position.

(quoted from post at 22:14:24 08/25/13) They are both in the same position relative to it's tire and the measurements are the same.

The only thing I have to compare with is our 870. The 870 the outside tie rod end is much closer to the tire than your pic shows. my guess is either both arms are indexed wrong or the vertical shaft of the spindles are twisted. That happens if you hit something hard with the front wheel, they are relative soft.

Thanks for the reply. I have measured the arms and they are roughly the same and they are also very close to how my 2390 is set up. The Case mechanic wondered if it had the wrong tie rod on it but I don't know how to tell. Suppose I could try to get a measurement on a new one from the dealer.

I'm with JW, slide it together, it will be fine. I would recheck the toe adjustment after moving the wheels. Looks like you have a nice tractor. Got a pic?
