An aquaintanance of mine stopped by last week, asking about a 530 that he was looking at. Asked him a few questions and determined that it was a late 530 row crop, with DOM. He said the seller had put all new clutch plates into the PTO, but wouldn't stay engaged. He said that he could buy it for 3K. He drove it up here yesterday afternoon, only about 4 miles. Bro and I talked about it this morning and determined that it was a very early 68 model. The PTO is really screwed up, as it won't turn when pulled forward and won't lock over center and it takes a 16" pipewrench to turn the shaft with the lever in any position. 3PT won't drop, (perhaps stuck hold valve), as rockshaft is free. Lefft brake a bit weak, but not adjusted up to the RH one. Both work decent. John S., looking for a Tach and cable for it. plus may need some other parts. I will call you this week.
There are some things different about this very early production 68 541. Draft armes may be after market, as they have combo CatI and CatII balls on the ends, and appear heavier than the Case arms. Also someone may have altered the foot throttle, as you need to put your heel on it to operate it. It actually works pretty good.
The row crop axles were weak on these tractors and the pic. shows how a lot of them riped open on a spiral. The 440/540 ylilized the same axle components, but the geometry was much diferent, to lower the profile.
