My 885 also grinds when trying to engage the pto with the engine running, and unless on a heavy load, will not quit turning when the clutch pedal is fully depressed. On pages 94 and 95 of the owner's manual it mentions some adjustment can be made by repositioning the clutch operating lever on its splined shaft. I tried to do that but the lever is seized on the shaft. I didn't want to get carried away as the lever is a casting. As well the tractor has a cab so there's not much room to get a puller on it. Does this adjustment do much good? The main trans clutch doesn't slip but needs most of it's travel before engaging.
I'm not sure if Nick 406's problem is the same as mine.

Sounds like you have a similar problem. I can adjust my clutch to where the transmission clutches with pedal almost all in the top travel range or all the way out and I adjusted it like you describe yours operating but it made no difference on the pto. Owners manual looks handy. Thanks
