Db case 885 pto clutch

Could someone give info on adjusting pto clutch with photo. I read about take off plate and adjust 3 screws but I can"t see it. Pto grinds and won"t go in gear with engine running. How could I tell if pto clutch was stuck

To adjust take off the bottom or side plate depending on the tractor. You loosen the jam nuts, and adjust the set screws till there is .060" to .070" clearance between the end of the screw and the casting. Mark each one as you do it. Then turn the engine over till you get to the next one.

There is also a chance that the adjustment is fine, but the intermediate plate, or PTO clutch plate are stuck. Easy way to fix this is put on a Tiller or brush hog, get it running by starting with it in gear, get it going to where you are really working the engine, then push in the clutch all the way.

I have the 885 instruction manual in pdf format. I can email it to you. It will tell you how to adjust clutch (with diagrams). PM me your email address.

My 885 also grinds when trying to engage the pto with the engine running, and unless on a heavy load, will not quit turning when the clutch pedal is fully depressed. On pages 94 and 95 of the owner's manual it mentions some adjustment can be made by repositioning the clutch operating lever on its splined shaft. I tried to do that but the lever is seized on the shaft. I didn't want to get carried away as the lever is a casting. As well the tractor has a cab so there's not much room to get a puller on it. Does this adjustment do much good? The main trans clutch doesn't slip but needs most of it's travel before engaging.

I'm not sure if Nick 406's problem is the same as mine.

Click on my "handle" or username. A box will pop up. Send me a valid email address and I'll send you the David Brown instruction book for the 880, 885 or 990 (I have all three!)

There is a plate on brake pedal side that I took off and could
see in the clutch area but I coulndnt identify the three adjusting
screws.

Sounds like you have a similar problem. I can adjust my
clutch to where the transmission clutches with pedal almost all
in the top travel range or all the way out and I adjusted it like
you describe yours operating but it made no difference on the
pto. Owners manual looks handy. Thanks

You need to be right underneath the tractor, the plate (plastic if memory serves) is about 2 1/2 X 3". The nuts and screws are in the cover its self, not on the release fingers like a Massey.

Joe, your posting has "no email" displayed in the lower right corner. I am interested in the PDF of the DB/Case 885 Operators Manual.

Click on my handle at the top of this message in order to send me a private mail. Where it says "Posted by joe stewart". I"ll send you the manual. Thanks

I'm going through the same thing on my 990. I took that cover off and found a grease soaked rats nest. Thought it was a lube issue because a little WD40 got it working for a while. Now I'm back to no release. I'm going back into the clutch to recheck the clearance. FWIW- the screws the manuals talk about are on the outboard edge of the clutch cover. 3 small, maybe 5/16" set type screws, Allen head, with a lock nut. As near as I can tell when the manual talks about checking clearances with a feeler they mean from the outside edge of the cover plate. I'm still figuring this out, but found the manual not all that clear on this. I'm using the DB/Case shop manual too.

My post on my issues and Rich's response is in this section under "Rut-row!"

Sir,

I need the information about the clutch on a Case 885. I have the same problem as everyone is describing, otherwise it is a great old tractor.

Thanks, paul W.
