Case 870 missing at pto speed

I thought I would put 870 I recently bought on the round baler this season. All seemed fine until I started working the tractor. By the time I had 1/2 bale I was downshifting the powershift and by 3/4 I had to change ranges. Just had no guts at all. When I run the rpm's up to 2000 with no load I think I hear a little miss in it. Only at 2000...at 1800 it runs clean.
When I was baling and downshifting it was just pouring the black smoke like I was pulling a seven bottom plow before I would shift down.
Powershift 870.........put the 930 on the baler and finished up. Any ideas? I just purchased this tractor so I have no prior history. I,m kind of thinking timing may be off??

RG is on the right tract. Also, try changing the fuel filters. The engine will smoke black when starved for fuel also. My money is on a plugged filter.

New air filter didn't do it. I will try the fuel filters next. I didn't think it would black smoke so much with a plugged filter. Gonna grab 2 this lunch from town. Seems to be fuel related since it's not turning out the horsepower. It's been demoted to the hay tedder for this morning. Thanks Guys.

Try the one way Valves at each side of the Hand Prime pump /my one 870 had hay & other junk trying to plug off the fuel =made it way down on power

Check for critter nests in the intake, I've seen all maner of crap stuffed in places on tractors. Black smoke is usually intake restriction or excesive fuel. Could also be old fuel if it sat. Also if it's been sitting or on light duty for a while they will get gummed up or something and will clean up with use. We got that every year with our 730 diesel that we used to haul manure all winter. Every spring it would be more gutless than usual even for that POS the first day of field work. Would take 1/2 day or more to get it cleaned out and up to usual speeds.

Dan: Keep us posted. I forgot to mention the screen in the fuel sediment bowl. Also, when you take the bowl off, fuel should run out a pretty good stream. When they starve for fuel, it actually retards the timing because nozzle opening pressure isn't achieved when it should, thus the smoke.

John, I think it was the fuel filters. I changed them both along with air filter. Not on the baler again but I took it in the fields and ran it up and down some big hills in range 4. Smoked plenty but I didn't hear that missing like before. I still am not sure of the fuel in it. It looks good and clean but could be 5 years old. I blended it with fresh fuel also. I really like the tractor and wanted to round bale with it. It should handle a New Holland 658. My 930 will handle it but uphill and close to a full bale will require a downshift. Thats where I figured this powershift 870 would be handy. 870 is good but it is not in the same league as the 1070 by any means. Never requires a downshift on that tractor.

along with all others good advice ....If You Suspect OLD FUEL ??get that fuel out of the tank ,, and use it sparingly later ,,depending on what fuel filters look like ,, if you find rust ,and sewer water,, get some 911 for about 10 gallon of fuel and run it ,,, alittle bit of Seafoam will not hurt ,, BUT KEEP IN MIND DIESELS AND ALCOHOL warnings ,,,Lucas Fuel stabilizer and Upper cylinder Lubricate Worx wonders for me ,,every time I get another tractor in ,before it gets a serious workout I put Lucas , oil stabiliz in crankcase and fuel conditioner stabilizer in tank ..it just makes everything so much smoother and happier ...

Back on the baler this afternoon. Worked much better. Range 3...powershift gear 3 and 2 up the hills. No problem today. Must have been the fuel filters....still grunts a little with a full bale but nice and cool in the cab. Thanks everyone for your expert advice.
