What is the perfect hay rake to match up with a case 800 series
tractor (54hp)?

Most people use a smaller tractor for raking, but if one tractor is all
you have, what then?

You are asking a loaded question!! In my part of the world, the 800s used to pull 42ft dump rakes. Then when the big wheel rakes came out, we went to a 16, 18 and now 20 plus wheels. I am pretty sure that a 20 wheel rake couldn't even unfold in some of the fields in different parts of the country.

The answer to that question has more to do with the baler used than the tractor. You want a rake that produces windrows sized appropriately for the baler you will be using. Of course there are more efficient and less efficient ways to produce that proper sized windrow....but a gigantic rake in a small field does not work well either so that factors into the equation.

If one tractor is all you have then you simply gear up and throttle down and the fuel consumption will still be reasonable even if pulling a tiny rake. Raking is certainly light easy work with traditional small rakes, but you would never pay for another tractor on any fuel savings seen by using a smaller tractor for the chore.

Heck some people use their bigger tractors to rake with (even though they have smaller ones readily available) simply because their bigger tractors usually have cabs, AC, radio, etc.

I was just looking at my 811b today and thinking about raking with it or doing something else with it. My hyd are fine but the PTO is pretty much shot, so the balers are out and the haybine is a little 7 footer. 54 hp of Case gasoline power seems a bit much for raking........

No, no, not a loaded question. Just a novice farmer.

Im almost 100 percent positive that a 20 wheel rake couldn't unfold across the fields I work.

Thanks for all the responses. What I gleaned from all the answers is that any rake will do, so I suppose I will look for the cheapest one I can find...

kidding.

My friend, as a charter member of "tractor-holics anonymous" let me help you out. What you need is a raking tractor IN ADDITION TO the 800!!! A nice little VAC would be puuurrrrrfect for raking!

I grew up on the North Loup River. I now live on the north edge of McKelvie National forest. Right on the Niobrara River.

Its kinda funny. When I bought my 42ft dump rake, in 1995, it was the cheapest I could find. Raked a lot of hay with it. Then I quit haying, and sold off every piece of haying equipment I owned.
In 2008, I moved back to the sandhills, and started accumulating haying equipment. I now have a '54 DC tied on to either a double bar Kosch mower, or a H&S 16 wheel v rake, a '58 800 diesel, tied onto which ever the DC isn't, and a 830 diesel COM tied onto a New Holland 271 baler with an OLD Farmhand, manual accumulator. With every piece of haying equipment, including the tractors, I have less then $4,000 tied up. You just have to be patient.

I pull a 9ft rake with a 930 so I guess i'm not the one to ask.

I one time let my wife rake, she asked what gear i said 2nd high at idle.

I dont think she heard the idle part. She went full throttle pulling the poor old rake. i got her stopped about a 1/4 mile down the field.

The rake looked like a fan going through the field.

That is funny -LOL. My wife is the exact opposite. She has a tendency to go too sloooowwww. In fairness she has health issues and she refuses to bounce herself to pieces no matter what.

To the OP: Another thing to keep in mind is that the bigger tractor will likely burn a bit more fuel but they also ride so much better. I often find myself using one of my ole junkers with big tires over my fuel sipper with little wheels. I simply ain't as young as I once was and a smooth ride is more appreciated than choosing a rougher ride and a mere few bucks in fuel savings.

My wife pulls our 12-wheel H&S High Capacity rake with a JD 60 in 4th. gear at low throttle. It does a nice job!

I use our 870 Case on a Hesston 14 foot Hydra-Swing swather for cutting hay,.... and our Case 1175 with a JD 535 to do the baling.

Going to bale some more alfalfa tomorrow. :>)
